Honoring a sheep
The Lent and Easter seasons have been very fruitful but also busy. I apologize for not blogging for some time. And the return post I make here will be unique. I don't think I've written before about a sheep to whom I was especially close. I presume it's okay because even Jesus had the "beloved disciple" (John, who represents all of us, the Church).
A parishioner named Irene died last week at the age of 89. She had been in good health the three years I knew her. Then, a few weeks ago she had to cancel our monthly lunch because she felt sick. A week later she was very sick with a fast-moving disease that no one saw coming. During my last visit with her a week ago, I administered the Anointing of the Sick and gave her the Apostolic Blessing which is basically the express lane to Heaven. I told her not to be afraid and that Jesus was with her.
Every funeral Mass is difficult and draining for me because I care deeply about all the sheep. But Wednesday's funeral for Irene will be even heavier because of the closeness I feel for her and now her family. I am so grateful for our parishioners who have sensed this and have stepped up so beautifully and generously to help. I will really miss my friend but will be very happy if we honor her and the Lord in the best way we can. Then, it will be the task to honor her memory and legacy in our parish which will be significant.
