The fun of snow

SNOW! I know not all of you have enjoyed the snowstorm of this week, but I have. Yes, it costs the parish money to remove the snow from our large parking lot. Yes, it is an inconvenience for daily routines. Yes, it can be treacherous and dangerous and I pray throughout for people’s safety. But it is FUN! The fun of snow is its best feature. Not every snowstorm shuts down work or school, but just about each one brings a spirit of youthful playfulness and a break from the normal routine. The second-best quality of snow is its peace. Especially on this property and with this particular snowfall, it is so beautiful. It wasn’t the best for snowballs or sledding on Monday (I tried both), but it was pretty.

I blogged last January about the silence associated with snow. Reading that post reminded me that that was the first accumulation of snow in almost two years! So, we haven’t had too much here the past few years. The peace and quiet of a snow-covered area are unmatched. Last night, I took a rosary walk around the property which was covered with a white blanket almost a foot deep. Ahhh, the beauty and the silence! (This was until I realized I had to shovel some walks which was a futile exercise anyway given the snow drifts.)

God is, of course, behind it all. He is such a creative Creator. And, quite a show-off at times! But, the creation of snow and the effect it has on virtually all of us point to a really cool aspect of His. He is a cool and fun God in addition to everything else. In the Gospel, Jesus says that the kingdom of God belongs to little children (see Mt 19:14). So, follow His words and let your inner 10 year-old-self enjoy his fun and beautiful creation of snow!
